Rediscovering Berkeley: A Weekend Staycation Guide

When was the last time you visited Berkeley? I just spent a wonderful weekend staycation in this vibrant city, and it was an experience filled with discovery, indulgence, and relaxation. Known for its rich academic history, eclectic culture, and culinary excellence, Berkeley offers diverse experiences that cater to every visitor. Whether exploring historic landmarks, indulging in the local food scene, or enjoying the natural beauty, Berkeley ensures a memorable adventure. Here’s a glimpse into my itinerary, highlighting the best of what Berkeley offers.

Where to Stay in Berkeley

Berkeley City Club

Known as “The Little Castle,” it was designed by the iconic Julia Morgan. Staying there felt like stepping into a living history book.

From quiet moments in the library to swimming in a historic pool and wandering through the beautiful courtyards, this is a destination you can’t miss.

Make sure to dine at their onsite Julia’s Restaurant, which serves delicious French food and will participate in the upcoming Berkeley Restaurant Week. It’s a popular spot with tourists and locals, so securing a reservation is recommended.

Graduate Hotel

For a change of scene, I also spent a night at the Graduate Hotel, which captures Berkeley’s collegiate spirit with its chic, academic-themed decor. Its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring the city. They count with two dining options on the property, Henrys and Poindexter Coffee.

Where To Eat

Julia’s Restaurant

At the Berkeley City Club, Julia’s Restaurant serves up French classics like escargot and the standout French onion soup, alongside a selection of timeless French dishes. Complement your meal with expertly crafted cocktails from Morgan’s Bar.

Henry’s at Graduate Hotel

Henry’s, inside the Graduate Hotel, serves up innovative American cuisine with a selection of local craft beers and cocktails. Its relaxed yet sophisticated setting makes it a perfect spot for dining in Berkeley, appealing to a wide range of tastes and preferences. I enjoyed their soup especially on a rainy day.

Local Experiences

Broc Cellars

If you’re a natural wine lover a great place to visit is Broc Cellars in The Gilman District Winery Block in Berkeley. On Thursdays and Fridays, it transforms into Bar Broc, offering tastings of their wines along with selections from other natural wine producers. Make sure to order bites to pair with the tasting.

Takara Sake Tasting Room provides a fun and communal tasting experience, inviting visitors to explore the diverse world of sake. With a variety of unique flavors to sample, guests can learn about traditional brewing methods in a lively, shared setting. The adjacent museum enhances the visit, showcasing artifacts from sake production history. This spot is perfect for anyone looking to dive into the craft and culture of sake in an engaging and social atmosphere. Make sure to try their seasonal flavors. I loved the yuzu sake,

Donkey and Goat Winery

Donkey and Goat is celebrated for its natural and sustainable winemaking, guided by founders Jared and Tracey Brandt. Their tasting room offers a cozy setting to explore organic and biodynamically farmed wines, including reds, whites, and unique orange wines. Visitors can enjoy learning about natural winemaking practices and the stories behind each wine. The winery’s community events, like Flamingo Night, provide a lively atmosphere for tasting and socializing, making Donkey and Goat a key destination for wine enthusiasts interested in the natural wine movement.
